Background
Huntsville Pediatric Associates (HPA) has been serving the area's children and families since 1965. The practice is home to six board certified pediatricians and 45 staff members, with services including mental health and speech therapy. HPA averages 57,000 yearly patient encounters and 3,500 triage calls a week.
The Challenge
Eliminating lost charts, increasing productivity and improving triage and overall patient care were key goals the search committee kept in mind as they evaluated EHRs. "During our search, Dr. Mike Klemm, Robin and I went on-site with one of Noteworthy's clients and were very impressed by the comments staff made," said Dr. Rebecca Cochran. "After talking with and seeing demos from a variety of vendors over the last few years, we knew we could actually take this giant leap with Noteworthy," said Robin Riggs, HPA's practice administrator.
"Noteworthy was far and away the most impressive."
Our Solution
HPA's commitment to providing unparalleled service to patients and families was put to the test as they implemented a new practice management system barely a month prior to implementing NoteworthyEHR. Because Noteworthy's six-stage implementation methodology is so effective and the user interface so easy to use, the process was surprisingly painless. Each administrative user attended just one hour of classroom training; clinical users attended just two hours of training. "The Noteworthy Team worked closely with us so we'd know what to expect," said Riggs. "The few issues were easily resolved."
The Results
On the very first day of go live, 100% of triage calls were entered in NoteworthyEHR, and multiple physicians saw 100% of their patients in the EHR by Day 3, a day earlier than expected. They've streamlined triage calls and enjoy instant access to more than 50,000 patient records and have eliminated lost charts. According to their practice administrator, "We never thought we'd be so productive so quickly!"
Fears about using a computer to document patient encounters were quickly eliminated as well:
"I was sure that using an EHR would interfere with the way we care and interact with our patients, but I love it!" said Dr. Bryan Laue.
And tomorrow? Despite precise coding prior to the transition to NoteworthyEHR, the practice still expects a significant increase in E&M code revenue and overall charge capture. (And happier patients too.)
